FAQ
MAGSA LEAGUE OVERVIEW 1) MAGSA stands for Memorial Ashford Girls Softball Association. MAGSA is a fast-pitch developmental league. MAGSA encourages a mix of recreational learning as well as development of competitive players.
A) 5-6 year-olds play Tee-Ball using an 11" Flexiball (soft training ball).
B) 7-8 Year olds play machine pitch using the 11" Flexiball.
C) 9-10 year olds fast-pitch the ball in games using a regulation 11" softball, with modified rules appropriate for the age group.
D) 11-12 year olds fast-pitch a regulation 12" softball and play ASA rules. These teams also play several games against outside league teams.
E) Ages 13 and up also play full ASA Rules and play against outside league teams.
2) MAGSA's main session runs from Feb. 20 - May 23, with the first month devoted to practices twice a week. Registration begins in December or Early January each year.
3)Game begin approx. March 20, twice a week with a weekend practice time. Most teams play at least 14 games.
4) 6U and 8U teams are selected by the managers. There is no draft, so the same group of girls can play together up through 8U.
Beginning with 10U, players are drafted by the managers, mostly to equalize pitching. The manager' daughter and and 1 coach's daughter are preselected. Also at 10U we require skill evaluations to assist managers with the draft process. This skill evaluation usually occurs on a Saturday near the end of January.
5) There is no experience requirement to manage a team, or coach on a team. What is required is the flexibility to learn the game and teach the children using Positive Coaching Techniques.
6) Each summer we do have managers who do take their own teams, or all-star teams to tournaments. The league supports them but does not organize the teams.
We have attempted to get a summer session going in the past, but so many people travel, etc. that we have not had enough interest. We also do not presently have a fall-ball session either, although that sounds like a good idea.
Sincerely, The Board of Directors, 2009
